Professor Santa J. Ono joins Action Against Age-related Macular Degeneration as Patron

Action Against Age-related Macular Degeneration is delighted to announce that Professor Santa J. Ono has accepted our invitation to become Patron.


Professor Ono is President of the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford, Professor of Ophthalmology & Immunology at the University of Oxford, and Senior Research Fellow at Worcester College, Oxford. A distinguished scientist and academic leader, he has previously served as President of the University of Michigan, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of British Columbia, and President of the University of Cincinnati.


His research has contributed to understanding the immune and inflammatory mechanisms involved in retinal disease, including age-related macular degeneration, while his leadership has helped advance research, innovation and scientific collaboration internationally.


Professor Ono said: "My research has included retinal disease and the immune mechanisms involved in age-related macular degeneration, giving me a deep appreciation of both the complexity of this condition and its impact on people's lives. Throughout my career, I have seen how collaboration across disciplines can accelerate progress against some of our most challenging diseases. AMD demands exactly that approach. I am honoured to support Action Against AMD as Patron and to help advance the science, innovation and partnerships needed to improve outcomes for future generations."

His appointment reflects AAAMD's commitment to advancing research and collaboration to improve understanding of AMD and identify new ways to prevent, delay and halt its progression.
